Sustainability deals with the ability and capacity of the systems to endure. In the context of the environment, it describes how biological beings maintain their diversity and productivity over time, and it is based on the reconciliation between its three main pillars, which are, the environmental demand, the social equity and the economic demand.
The most crucial aspect to have in account for sustainability purposes is the environmental demand, since it is related to the natural (renewable or nonrenewable) resources consumption. In that vein, there exists two major ways of reduce negative human impact and improving the ecosystems services, the first is the environmental management and the second is the demand management of the human resource use.
The environmental management encompasses the proper use of oceans, fresh water systems, land and atmosphere, according to the sustainability principles. The most common problems are related with the inappropriate urbanization and agriculture practices, which have a marked effect on the global water, carbon and nitrogen cycles.
Although proper human resource use has been in the world's eye in the recent years through research and discussion about the generation of sustainable environmental systems, most of the people have not considered sustainability aspects as a foundation of their production activities and in the developing of sustainable business practices. For this, the following basic sustainability principles must be taken into account:
- Reduce dependence on fossil fuels, underground minerals and metals.
- Reduce dependence on synthetic chemical and other unnatural substances.
- Reduce the excessive abuse of nature.
- Meet human needs in a more clean and efficient way.
